Impact Echo via Portable Impact-Echo System (PIES)

Qualitest Presents PIES the most advanced Portable Impact Echo System for concrete on the market

March 29, 2009

Testing concrete has always been a problematic and cumbersome endeavor. Typical tests to determine concrete quality involve coring numerous samples in order to get suitable information through destructive compression testing. Content and flaw detection generally performed by ground penetrating radar (GPR) and ultrasonic systems can typically penetrate no deeper than eight inches. With the newly developed impact echo technology, concrete content determination is made accessible and efficient while dramatically reducing testing time.

ASTM recently announced its acceptance of impact echo technology under the ASTM C1383 standard. Impact echo technology is based on the detection of stress waves caused by an impact on the surface of the test medium. With the portable impact echo system (PIES), the technician is equipped with a patented piezo-electric crystal displacement sensor, a handheld palm computer and a set of impactors. The test surface is struck causing a very slight elastic deformation that propagates throughout the material as compression (P) waves and shear (S) waves. The waves propagate through the material, reflecting and diffracting off the inside surfaces of the material. The waves are quickly detected by the sensor as they return to the surface of the material. These very slight deformations are translated into a voltage and read by the palm computer for the results of the test. A single test takes less than a second to perform, allowing the technician to run numerous tests on a vast area in very little time. Comparatively, impact echo technology can cover the same area of GPR systems in almost a tenth of the time.

With an understanding of impact echo technology and the testing process, the technician can select the parameters of the test. The user can increase or decrease the level of detail to find voids, honeycombing or most other inside imperfections in the concrete. As the stress waves bend and reflect off the inside conditions, great amounts of detail are gained with a single test. Furthermore, the stress waves propagate inside the concrete with very little deterioration. Very little accuracy is lost with increased thickness, allowing the unit to perform reliably even to a depth of 30 feet, far surpassing the limits of ultrasonic and radar technology.

The basic function of the PIES is to determine concrete thickness. As already discussed, this system can yield data on the solid concrete's flaw characteristics. With the included programming, the information gathered from each test can also be used to calculate other properties of the sample material. Properties such as the static and dynamic elastic moduli and Poisson's ratio can be determined without the need for destructive tests. The determination of these properties also allows insight into the concrete sample's compressive strength. Because of the potential flaws inherent in the concrete, the compressive strength cannot directly be determined without comparison to destructive compression tests. Even so, the information from crushing two or three core samples is enough to accurately determine the compressive strength at any other point in the concrete. This method reduces an area requiring thirty core compression tests to three, reducing the time required, expenses accrued and damage to the finished structure.

The Qualitest PIES unit comes with everything needed in order to perform expert impact echo testing. The handheld computer comes prepared for testing and need only be connected to the system to begin. The handheld computer is protected by a dust-proof casing and the sensor power and conversion system is all supported by a light-weight power supply and signal digitizer. An impact echo technology workshop is included in the package as well as an instructional suite including detailed manuals and texts as well as video training. For more information on Qualitest's PIES please visit our website at www.WorldofTest.com/impact-echo.htm. QualiScope Advanced Automatic Brinell Measurement System

Qualitest presents the latest in Brinell Measurement Technology – Qualiscope II

March 24, 2009

Qualitest presents QualiScope II, the latest technology in handheld automatic brinell measurement systems. QualiScope II is designed to make your testing program faster and more accurate. It also improves quality control management - it automatically stores data and is network capable.

Although the Brinell test is widely known as one of the most accurate test methods for hardness testing of metals, error in the reading of the indentation size results in measurement errors of 0.1 mm between operators - the range is even greater between labs. This error can take up your entire tolerance specification. The QualiScope II will virtually eliminate operator influence on test results. Repeatability and reproducibility will be greatly improved using the QualiScope II measurement system; test results will no longer change with every shift change.

QualiScope II features a CCD camera mounted in a rugged protective housing and the advanced optics allows for measurements to be carried out with plus/minus 0.5% accuracy and a resolution of up to 0.003mm. The advanced image analysis software automatically measures the diameter of the indentation and calculates the brinell hardness value according to ASTM E10. All measurements are stored with their image which allows for re-evaluation of the results. The operator can freely select data sets for customized reports and export data to external quality control software solutions.

Increased speed and accuracy changes the capability of your entire Brinell program dramatically. Instead of being a rough quality control measurement to find defects, the testing can add process control functionality to quickly predict potential production problems and correct them before bad parts start streaming out the other end.

To find out more about how QualiScope II can solve your brinell measurement needs please visit www.WorldofTest.com/qualiscope.htm

DIN Abrasion Tester

Qualitest presents the re-designed DIN Abrasion Tester

December 21, 2008

Qualitest presents the DIN Abrasion tester, which is the original product developed in Germany and sold worldwide. The DIN Abrasion tester is designed to conform to the ASTM D5963 and IS0 4649 standards (ISO 4649 has replaced the DIN 53516 standard).

This top quality and highly popular abrasion tester will allow you to measure the abrasion resistance of rubbers (vulcanized thermoset rubbers and thermoplastic elastomers) that are subject to abrasive/frictional wear in their actual service, such as tires, conveyor drive belts, and shoe soles. Since wear is always a result of abrasion, different test methods have been developed for the simulation of long term wear.

The method conforming to ASTM D5963 / ISO 4649 has proven to be the best way of simulating long term wear. This method enables comparative tests for the control of the uniformity of a specific material. The achieved test results provide important parameters in respect to the wear of elastomers in practical use.

The abrasion resistance is measured by moving a test piece across the surface of an abrasive sheet mounted to a revolving drum, and is expressed as volume loss in cubic millimeters or abrasion resistance index in percent. For volume loss, a smaller number indicates better abrasion resistance, while for the abrasion resistance index, a smaller number denotes poorer abrasion resistance. The DIN Abrasion tester can also be used for comparative measurements on other materials such as plastics, chalk or painted surfaces.
