The second generation ear measuring instrument, Model 126 C is used in quality assurance when sheets are produced and processed. The equipment makes it possible to evaluate the quality of the material as well as supervise the adjustment of the processing machines.

Due to the optimized feeding process of the equipment, the short cycle period, as well as the fully automated data acquisition and evaluation, even most extensive series of measurements are managable within a short time and no further training is needed for its operation. It takes less than 15 seconds for the specimen to be inserted and measured! The purchase of the Ear Measuring Instrument saved a prominent manufacturer of beverage cans money by decreasing waste products substantially. The standardized material evaluation processes of manufacturer and supplier resulted in optimizing the quality of the material.

Test Administration and evaluation

The complete process of test administration and evaluation takes place at the computer, which is connected to the machine via the network Ethernet over TCP/IP. Detailed reports and print outs are available according to standard. The measurement data are displayed in a graph which allows zooming and measuring and more functions.

All measuring data, parameter and information material are standardised in XML format so that the use of other programs available is possible at all times.

An example implementation to import and display the data with Microsoft® Excel is enclosed with the equipment.

The basic package contains the analysis software which automatically determines ears and troughs. Afterwards these can be corrected manually with the fast and easy help of the cursor on the graph itself. The skewness of the test specimen is determined and a characteristic index calculation is performed following DIN EN 1669: 1996 with the accordingly corrected data record.

Basic package
  • Proportional mean earing
  • Maximum ear height
  • Minimum height
  • Mean height
  • Direction of the skewness
  • Skewness
  • Number of ears
  • Paired Earing

This package can be adjusted and extended to suit specific needs which are relevant in practice due to the various number of different analytic methods.

Extensions (selection):

  • Max Earing
  • Delta Earing
  • Sigma Earing
  • Mean Earing
  • Classification of the ears

We offer competent consultation for individual needs, further data and methods.

Calculations and measurements

The computations of the Ear Measuring Instrument, Model 126 C cover parameters according to DIN EN (European Norm) 1669, standard procedures and extended, individual computations for specific defaults. For the documentation of the results detailed report and print functions are available. All data and results can easily be converted so they are compatible with standard software like for instance Microsoft® Excel, so that further computations and report functions can be used.

The test specimen used are cups, manufactured according to DIN EN (European Norm) 1669. During the production process of beverage cans or similar products, cups and raw cans are extracted at different stages in that process. These specimen can now be measured. The Ear Measuring Instrument computes standardized earing gauge data from the measured cup height profile, so that it is possible to analyse the sheet metal texture and the deep-drawing process. On the one hand the equipment supplies comprehensive characteristic values for the anisotropy of the material, which is a result of heterogeneity, degrees of hardness and the used rolling procedures. These anisotropic characteristics affect the ear geometry of deep-drawing products considerably and lead to substantial waste and fluctuations in the wall thickness.

On the other hand characteristic indices can be determined for the adjustable position of the stamp tools. These indices help perfect the concentricity of the stamp.

Operation

The Ear Measuring Instrument, Model 126 C consists of a positionable precision turntable and a measuring head with vertical length pressure foot. The height profile of the test specimen is recorded along its circumference within one revolution (360°). The test specimen is fastened to the turntable by a magnet and centered by co-ordinated pins. The measuring head can be adjusted variably for different circumference and height measurements of the test specimen. It is possible to switch between two different sized test specimen comfortably.

Measuring is a fully automated process in which the measuring wheel works pneumatically. After the measuring process is completed the measuring wheel folds away to enable a fast and easy change of the test specimen. Operations like initiating the measuring process can be started at the machine as well as at the computer. The built-in display shows the contemporary operational stage and the operating instructions on the machine. This makes it possible to change and measure test specimen of a large series at the machine itself without the need for the computer at all. Positioning and measuring the test specimen takes less than 15 seconds because of the short cycle time and the optimized feeding capacity of the machine.
