A tape retentivity tester also called a shear adhesion tester or holding power tester measures the time a pressure-sensitive adhesive (PSA) tape can resist sliding (shear) movement under a constant tensile load applied parallel to the bonded surface. In the standard test configuration, a 1-inch-wide tape specimen is applied to a vertical stainless steel panel using a 4.5-pound roller at 300 mm/min (one pass in each direction to ensure consistent contact pressure), then loaded with a defined counterweight hanging from the free end of the tape. The time from load application to tape detachment is the holding power or retentivity value — expressed in minutes or hours.
