Shear Adhesion Testers for Pressure Sensitive Tapes – QualiTRT™ Series

A tape retentivity tester  also called a shear adhesion tester or holding power tester measures the time a pressure-sensitive adhesive (PSA) tape can resist sliding (shear) movement under a constant tensile load applied parallel to the bonded surface. In the standard test configuration, a 1-inch-wide tape specimen is applied to a vertical stainless steel panel using a 4.5-pound roller at 300 mm/min (one pass in each direction to ensure consistent contact pressure), then loaded with a defined counterweight hanging from the free end of the tape. The time from load application to tape detachment is the holding power or retentivity value — expressed in minutes or hours. This test is governed by ASTM D3654, PSTC 107, and JIS Z0237 and is a fundamental quality specification for virtually every category of PSA tape, from masking and packaging tapes to foam tapes, automotive attachment tapes, and medical adhesives.

Shear adhesion is distinct from peel adhesion (the force to remove tape at an angle) and initial tack (the immediate bond formed on first contact). Where peel and tack measure instantaneous adhesive response, retentivity quantifies sustained load-bearing performance over time — the property that determines whether a taped assembly holds together in service for hours, days, or months. For high-temperature applications, retentivity must be characterized at elevated temperatures that simulate actual service conditions, since PSA adhesives are viscoelastic and their shear resistance decreases significantly as temperature rises. Qualitest's QualiTRT™ Series addresses this need across three models: the QualiTRT™-D for standard single-specimen ambient testing, the QualiTRT™-ABC for multi-specimen parallel testing of multiple tape formulations or lots simultaneously at ambient temperature, and the QualiTRT™-H for elevated temperature testing within a programmable chamber capable of reaching 200°C — covering automotive paint-bake qualification, HVAC duct tape certification, and aerospace thermal performance testing.

Hold Power. Proven.

Whether your laboratory qualifies automotive tapes for 180°C paint-bake oven exposure, tests industrial masking tape holding power to ASTM D3654, compares three competing adhesive formulations side-by-side in a single test run, or verifies that a medical device attachment tape will remain bonded through sterilization and clinical handling, the QualiTRT™ Series has the instrument for the test. Automatic timer stop, standardized roller application, stainless steel test panels, and full compliance with ASTM D3654, PSTC 107, and JIS Z0237 give you data that is reproducible, defensible, and directly comparable to supplier specifications and industry benchmarks. Contact Qualitest today to speak with an adhesive testing specialist, request a technical datasheet for any QualiTRT™ model, or discuss your specific tape type, service temperature, and test throughput requirements.
