The QualiFlame™ UL94 A automatic flammability test chamber performs horizontal and vertical burning tests on plastics, printed circuit boards, and finished electrical parts. A single instrument covers HB, V-0, V-1, V-2, 5VA, and 5VB classification work. Qualitest supplies it in 50 W and 500 W burner configurations. The stainless steel chamber shell and internal components resist smoke residue and corrosive combustion gases. PLC control with a touch interface manages ignition timing, flame application, and test sequencing.

Test and control sections share one integrated cabinet, which simplifies site installation and commissioning. The chamber exceeds 0.5 m³ and carries a black interior, so small flames and afterglow stay visible during observation. Operators set flame application time, afterflame timing, and burner position at the panel. The burner tilts to 0°, 20°, and 45° to cover the horizontal, vertical, and inclined specimen positions that the methods call for.

Flame calibration uses a drilled copper block and a 0.5 mm Type K thermocouple. The block heats through a defined temperature rise within a preset time, which confirms that the burner delivers correct thermal output before testing begins. Methane at 98% minimum purity feeds the burner, and the flow meter holds 965 ml/min for the 500 W flame or 105 ml/min for the 50 W flame. Both configurations use a 9.5 mm bore burner tube.

Theory and Method

Flammability classification does not measure a single material property. It measures how a specimen of defined thickness behaves against a defined flame for a defined time, then ranks that behavior. The horizontal test lays the bar flat, applies the 50 W flame for 30 seconds, and times the flame front between two gauge marks to calculate a linear burning rate. A material that self-extinguishes before the first mark, or burns slower than the rate limit, earns an HB rating.

Vertical testing raises the severity because the flame front travels toward unburned material and preheats it. The specimen hangs above a cotton indicator layer, and the 50 W flame applies twice for 10 seconds each. Timers record afterflame duration following each application and afterglow after the second. V-0, V-1, and V-2 differ by those permitted times and by whether flaming drips ignite the cotton beneath. Dripping behavior separates otherwise similar materials.

The 500 W flame raises energy input by roughly an order of magnitude for 5VA and 5VB work. Five flame applications of five seconds each, spaced five seconds apart, expose bar and plaque specimens. Plaques reveal whether burn-through occurs, which is what distinguishes 5VA from 5VB. Copper block calibration underpins all of this: an uncalibrated flame invalidates the comparison, so each block heats through the specified temperature rise within the preset time before testing starts.
