Theory and Method

Bloom value is the standardized measurement of gel strength, representing the force required to deform a gel under defined conditions.

In a typical Bloom test:

  1. A 12.7 mm stainless-steel cylindrical probe descends vertically onto the gel surface.
  2. The probe penetrates the sample to a depth of 4.00 ± 0.05 mm at a controlled speed.
  3. The maximum force required to reach this depth is recorded.
  4. This force is automatically converted into Bloom grams (g) and reported as the Bloom value.

Because gel strength is sensitive to temperature and conditioning time, the instrument ensures stable displacement and force measurement, while sample conditioning is controlled externally according to laboratory SOPs.
