Compact Pure Water System - QualiPWS™ C

QualiPWS™ C is a benchtop deionized water system that delivers reagent grade water from a 273 mm wide cabinet weighing 20 kg. Qualitest North America offers the Compact Pure Water System where bench space is short and the water demand is steady rather than heavy. Three output rates cover 20, 40, and 60 liters per hour. Storage sits inside the housing, so nothing else has to go on the bench.

Deionized water comes off the system above 17.5 MΩ·cm at 25 °C, clearing the ASTM D1193 Type II resistivity requirement. A second outlet gives first-pass RO water for autoclave fill, glassware washing, and chamber humidifiers. Both outlets run from a three-button panel that dispenses either grade without menu navigation. Flow reaches 2 liters per minute, drawn from a sealed 1.8-liter pressure tank.

A white LCD panel measuring 68 × 87 mm reports what the system is doing: flushing, producing water, tank full, feed shortage, or maintenance due. Two sensors watch RO and deionized water quality and raise an alarm when either drifts. The controller tracks remaining life on all four consumables and prompts replacement before output falls off. Power draw scales with output, from 48 W on the 20 L/h model to 120 W on the 60 L/h model.

Theory and Method

Two purification stages sit in series because each one handles a job the other does poorly. Reverse osmosis strips the bulk ionic load first, rejecting 98 to 99 percent of dissolved inorganic salts and better than 99 percent of organic molecules above 300 Dalton at the membrane surface. Ion-exchange resin then polishes what remains. Feeding raw tap water straight to resin would exhaust the 2.72 liters of media quickly, so the membrane carries the bulk removal and the resin bed lasts far longer.

Free chlorine in municipal supply oxidizes polyamide membrane material, so it has to go before the water reaches the RO stage. The pretreatment cartridge handles particles and chlorine in one body: a deep-folded 5 μm membrane traps solids, and activated carbon fiber adsorbs chlorine and organics. Fiber form matters here, since granular carbon sheds fines that carry downstream and foul the membrane. A pump then raises pressure past the osmotic pressure of the feed, and a flow restrictor maintains the concentrate stream.

Resistivity gives the fastest read on how much ionic contamination survives the train. Pure water conducts poorly, so a sensor in the deionized line measures resistance across a fixed cell and reports it in MΩ·cm, where a higher number means fewer dissolved ions. The controller alarms when the reading falls, and a forced flush clears accumulated salts off the membrane surface between production cycles. On the bacteria and particle build, a double-layer PES microfilter at the outlet catches organisms picked up during storage.
