Theory and Method

Ultrasonic flaw detection relies on how high-frequency sound travels through solid material and reflects at internal boundaries. A piezoelectric probe converts an electrical pulse into a burst of ultrasound and couples it into the part through a thin film of gel or oil. The beam travels in a straight path until it reaches an interface where acoustic impedance changes. Cracks, voids, inclusions, and the back wall all reflect part of the energy back to the probe, which converts each echo into an electrical signal.

The detector displays each echo as an A-scan, a graph of signal amplitude against time. Because sound moves through a given material at a known, constant velocity, the time an echo takes to return maps directly to the depth of the reflector. Echo amplitude indicates reflector size and orientation, so a taller signal usually points to a larger flaw. The operator calibrates the horizontal and vertical scales against a reference block, because beam path and echo height are relative rather than absolute values.

The QualiSonic™ Series applies this principle with a 400 MHz hardware sampling rate that captures fast, detailed waveforms, and a 20 MHz wideband amplifier that pairs with straight-beam, angle-beam, dual-crystal, and specialty probes. Dual gates track the flaw echo and expand the region of interest across the full screen, while automatic sound-velocity and delay calibration lock the readings to the material under test. Selecting the right probe frequency and gate settings lets an inspector balance penetration depth against near-surface resolution for each material.
