Elmendorf Tear Tester – QualiELM™ Digi-II

QualiELM™ Digi-II - Elmendorf Tear Tester is a precision Elmendorf-type Tear Tester designed to accurately measure the tear resistance of films, paper, textiles, and flexible materials. Tear resistance, also known as tear strength, quantifies a material’s ability to resist the propagation of an existing cut when subjected to a defined load, making it a critical indicator of durability and in-use performance.

Using the proven pendulum method, the QualiELM™ Digi-II Series measures the energy loss as a pendulum tears a pre-slit specimen over a fixed distance. This standardized approach provides highly repeatable, operator-independent results, supporting material selection, quality control, and product development across packaging, paper, textile, and industrial material applications.

Theory and Method

The QualiELM™ Digi-II Series operates on the Elmendorf pendulum tear method, originally standardized in the 1930s and still regarded as a benchmark for tear testing. A specimen is first prepared with a defined slit positioned a fixed distance from the edge. When the test begins, a PLC-controlled pneumatic latch releases the pendulum, which swings through the specimen under gravity.

As the pendulum propagates the tear, the instrument precisely measures the loss in potential energy. This energy loss is automatically converted into average tear force values, expressed in grams-force (gf) or millinewtons (mN). Embedded software performs statistical calculations and displays final tear resistance results without manual data handling.
