Geotextile Characteristic Opening Size (COS) Tester - QualiGTX™ COS

QualiGTX™ COS Geotextile Characteristic Opening Size Tester determines the O90 opening size of woven, nonwoven, and composite geotextiles by the wet sieving method, giving filter designers the pore dimension that governs whether a fabric will retain the soil behind it. Graded granular material sits on an unstressed single-layer specimen clamped in a Ø176 mm ring, and a water spray washes the particles through while the assembly vibrates. Collecting, drying, and grading the material that passes produces the opening size figure that appears on European product declarations and filter design calculations.

Qualitest built the COS to the apparatus requirements of the international wet sieving method. Wetted components use 304 stainless steel, so the frame stands up to continuous spray without corrosion staining the collected sample. A 550 W motor running at 2800 rpm drives the sieve deck at 1.5 mm amplitude, and the programmable timer covers intervals up to 999 seconds so an operator sets the sieving period once and walks away.

The instrument ships with the graded standard particle fractions the method calls for, which removes the sourcing problem that often delays commissioning of an opening size laboratory. Geotextile manufacturers, notified bodies, certification laboratories, and university research groups use the COS for conformity declarations, production control, and filter compatibility studies. At 110 kg in a 700 × 550 × 1100 mm footprint, it fits a standard laboratory bay alongside the drying and sieving equipment the method also requires.
