Handheld portable XRF analyzers serve any workflow that needs fast, on-site elemental analysis without sending samples to a laboratory. The three QualiX 2000 models address distinct application groups.
1. Metals Quality Control and Positive Material Identification
The QualiX 2000A targets alloy verification in manufacturing plants, fabrication shops, and receiving docks. Operators use it to confirm incoming raw materials match purchase orders, verify correct alloy installation in piping systems, and sort mixed-grade inventory. Positive material identification (PMI) programs aligned with API RP 578 and ASTM E1476 often rely on handheld XRF as the primary screening tool. The analyzer identifies alloy grades within seconds, reads light elements down to magnesium, and stores results with GPS coordinates for traceability.
2. Scrap Metal Recycling and Sorting
Scrap yards sort ferrous and non-ferrous metals by grade to maximize recovery value. The QualiX 2000A distinguishes stainless steel grades (304 vs. 316, for example), separates copper alloys from brass, and flags contaminated lots before they enter the melt stream. Fast test times (often under three seconds for grade identification) keep sorting throughput high, and detection limits in the low-ppm range catch trace-level contaminants that affect melt quality.
3. Mining, Exploration, and Geological Surveys
The QualiX 2000M supports geochemists and exploration geologists who need real-time geochemical data in the field. It measures ore grade in drill core, maps trace-element distribution across outcrops, and screens soil and stream-sediment samples for pathfinder elements. On-site results accelerate drilling decisions and reduce the volume of samples shipped to an assay laboratory. Built-in GPS tags every reading with geographic coordinates, which simplifies geological mapping and data integration into GIS platforms.
4. Environmental Site Assessment
Environmental consultants use the QualiX 2000M to screen soil for heavy-metal contamination (lead, arsenic, mercury, cadmium, zinc, and others) during site characterization and remediation monitoring. Handheld XRF field screening aligned with U.S. EPA Method 6200 reduces the number of samples that require laboratory confirmation, which lowers project cost and compresses timelines.
5. RoHS and Restricted-Substance Compliance
The QualiX 2000R screens electronic components, polymers, and finished goods for the six substances restricted under the RoHS Directive (2011/65/EU): lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), mercury (Hg), hexavalent chromium (Cr VI, screened as total Cr), polybrominated biphenyls (PBB, screened as total Br), and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDE, screened as total Br). Screening follows IEC 62321-3-1, which defines XRF as an accepted method for rapid pass/fail determination. The silver anode tube and optional 6.0 mm collimator optimize sensitivity for these regulated elements in polymer and mixed-material matrices.
