The QualiSonic™ W Series is a portable ultrasonic flaw detector for weld inspection that locates cracks, porosity, and inclusions in welds, pipelines, and metal parts. It reads how flaws change the path of an ultrasonic wave, so the test finds internal defects without cutting the part. Welders, pipeline crews, and NDT inspectors get a handheld unit with a bright color screen and a rugged, sealed body. The instrument shows each echo on a full-screen A-scan and marks reflectors with dual gates and a variable alarm. Theory and Method

Ultrasonic flaw detection sends high-frequency sound into a part and reads the echoes that come back. A piezoelectric probe turns an electrical pulse into a burst of ultrasound and couples it into the surface through a thin layer of gel or oil. The wave travels in a straight beam until it reaches a boundary where acoustic impedance changes. A crack, pore, inclusion, or the back wall reflects part of the energy to the probe, which converts each echo into an electrical signal.

The detector plots each echo as an A-scan, a graph of amplitude against time. Because sound moves through a given material at a known velocity, the return time of an echo maps to the depth of the reflector. Echo amplitude points to reflector size and orientation, so a taller peak usually means a larger flaw. The operator first calibrates the screen against a reference block, since beam path and echo height are relative rather than absolute values.

The QualiSonic™ W Series applies this principle with a 400 MHz sampling rate and a 0 to 22 MHz wideband amplifier for straight-beam and angle-beam probes. Angle-beam probes matter for welds, because the beam enters at a slant and reaches the weld root and fusion faces that a straight beam would miss. Narrow-pulse drive sharpens each echo and lifts the signal-to-noise ratio, so small weld flaws stand out from grain noise.
