Theory and Method

RDE-OES or rotating disc electrode optical emission spectrometer, measures metallic elements in oil or fuel by exciting the sample and reading the characteristic light emitted by each element. The technique is used for rapid multi-element analysis of wear metals, contaminants, and additive elements in service fluids.

During testing, a rotating graphite disc introduces a thin film of sample into the excitation zone. The energized sample emits light at element-specific wavelengths, and the spectrometer measures those wavelengths to calculate concentration levels. This method allows quick screening with minimal sample handling, making it highly practical for maintenance and routine condition monitoring.

The QualiRDE™8000 applies this principle through a holographic grating optical system, microprocessor-controlled acquisition, and software functions such as calibration support, statistical calculations, standardization, and result reporting.
