Soil-Confined Geosynthetic Transmissivity Tester - QualiGTX™ IPF S
QualiGTX™ IPF S Soil-Confined Transmissivity Tester measures the in-plane flow capacity of drainage geocomposites, geonets, and drainage boards while the specimen sits buried between compacted soil layers rather than clamped between rigid steel platens. Qualitest supplies the IPF S to geotechnical laboratories, landfill designers, and transportation engineers who need drainage numbers that reflect installed conditions rather than an index value. The instrument houses an 800 × 500 × 650 mm test box that carries soil above and below a 450 mm flow length of drainage material. Water enters upstream, travels the length of the confined specimen, and discharges for measurement.
Soil confinement changes the answer, often dramatically. A geotextile pressed against a drainage core by real soil deflects into the core apertures and narrows the channels that carry water, a mechanism that rigid-platen testing never reproduces. Laboratories that only test between steel plates report flow capacities well above what the same product delivers in the ground.
Design teams use the IPF S to build defensible reduction factors instead of borrowing generic values from literature. Filling the box with the actual subgrade, backfill, or cover soil planned for the project produces a flow capacity tied to that job rather than a catalog figure. Contractors and owners get a number that survives review.
