Soil Freeze Thaw Chamber / Tester
Soil Freeze Thaw Chamber / Tester is an advanced tool designed for soil testing according to ASTM and AASHTO standards. It features a complete 5-day freeze-thaw cycle with realistic temperature gradients and precise measurements using a high-precision LVDT gauge. The set-up includes a CBR freeze/thaw cell, thermometers, insulation plates, cooling units, and a data logger with Ethernet connectivity. This comprehensive system ensures accurate assessment of soil materials' frost resistance, crucial for road construction and longevity. Access data easily through any modern web browser or direct network connection.
The use of various building materials is particularly important in road construction. For a long service life of traffic routes, it is essential that the road surface and substructure have the same load-bearing capacity. The bearing layers are exposed to significant temperature fluctuations and frost. Assessing the construction materials for their frost resistance can be conducted through the frost-heave test, following the Swiss standard SN 670 321a (2001).
Before starting the test, the optimal water content of the soil sample is set. The simple 5-day test includes a complete freeze-thaw cycle with realistic temperature gradients. The sample container is made of an insulating material to prevent thermal bridge formation. The uplift is measured continuously and with micrometer accuracy using a high-precision LVDT gauge. Additionally, temperatures are recorded at the base and on the surface of the soil sample.
