Standard Dual RO Pure Water System - QualiPWS™ S-RO

QualiPWS™ S-RO is a dual pass reverse osmosis water system that sends feed water through two membrane stages before it reaches the ion-exchange bed. Qualitest North America supplies the Standard Dual RO Pure Water System to laboratories working from hard or high-conductivity municipal supply, where a single membrane pass leaves too much ionic load behind. Output covers 13 and 25 liters per hour. A 60-liter storage tank holds the finished water.

Second-pass RO water leaves the membrane stack below 5 µS/cm and above 0.2 MΩ·cm, holding that quality on feed water as conductive as 1,500 µS/cm. Deionized water from the polishing cartridges runs above 17.5 MΩ·cm at 25 °C, clearing ASTM D1193 Type II. Both grades dispense from the host at up to 2 liters per minute in general or quantitative mode. The storage tank adds a third dispensing point.

A 5-inch capacitive touchscreen carries the full system diagram: process flow, cartridge configuration, live water quality, RO rejection rate, remaining cartridge life, and tank level on one view. Ethernet and WiFi link the unit to a cloud platform for remote monitoring, alarm response, and LIMS or BMS integration. Five years of operating records stay on the host and export as PDF reports for traceability files. Multi-user accounts allocate dispensing volume and consumable cost by department.

Theory and Method

A single reverse osmosis membrane rejects 98 to 99 percent of dissolved ions, which leaves one to two percent of the feed load in the permeate. Sending that permeate through a second membrane applies the same rejection to a much cleaner stream, so the two passes compound. The result holds below 5 µS/cm on feed water up to 1,500 µS/cm, a range that would push a single-pass system past its useful output. Removal of soluble organics, microorganisms, and particles reaches 99 percent.

Carbon dioxide slips past both membranes as a dissolved gas rather than an ion, converting to bicarbonate once the water leaves the stack. Ion-exchange resin therefore still does necessary work at the end of the train. The bed trades hydrogen and hydroxide ions for residual cations and anions until resistivity climbs above 17.5 MΩ·cm. Arriving at that bed below 5 µS/cm rather than at single-pass quality means far fewer ions to capture, so the resin lasts longer between changes.

Two automatic routines protect the membranes and the water downstream. Flushing runs on an adjustable interval and duration, sweeping concentrated salts off the membrane face before they precipitate as scale. A quality check at the RO outlet diverts off-spec permeate to drain rather than letting it reach the ion-exchange stage, which preserves resin capacity during startup and after a cartridge change. On the bacteria and particle build, a double-layer PES microfilter at the outlet retains organisms picked up in the tank.
