Ultrapure Water Polisher - QualiUWP™ S Series

QualiUWP™ S Ultrapure Water Polisher produces Type I reagent water at 18.2 MΩ·cm for laboratories that already run a reverse osmosis, deionization, EDI, or distillation system upstream. The polisher draws pretreated feed and delivers finished water on demand at up to 2 liters per minute. A 7-inch capacitive color touchscreen drives the control system, and the HiDis dispenser arm places the outlet wherever the bench layout requires. Water is polished on demand, so no ultrapure volume sits in storage losing quality between uses.

Four configurations share the same host, control platform, and dispensing hardware. The QualiUWP™ S covers analytical chemistry and general laboratory work. The QualiUWP™ S-UV adds dual-wavelength photooxidation to bring TOC down to 2 ppb. The QualiUWP™ SUF adds an ultrafiltration module for endotoxin, nuclease, and protease removal, and the QualiUWP™ S-UVF combines both. Selecting a model comes down to whether the workload is organics-sensitive, biologically sensitive, or both.

Laboratories running HPLC, ICP-MS, ion chromatography, and trace-level spectrometry need water that adds no background ions or organics to the result. Every QualiUWP™ Smodel holds conductivity at 0.055 µS/cm, particle counts below 1 per milliliter above 0.2 µm, and bacteria below 0.01 CFU/mL. Two sensors monitor the incoming feed and the polished output separately, so operators see feed quality drift before it reaches the analysis.

Theory and Method

Pure water is never fully non-conductive. Water self-ionizes, so at 25°C hydrogen and hydroxide ions each sit at 1 × 10⁻⁷ mol/L, giving a conductivity of 0.055 µS/cm and a resistivity of 18.2 MΩ·cm. That figure is a physical ceiling. Mixed-bed ion exchange drives water toward it: cation resin in the hydrogen form captures sodium and calcium, anion resin in the hydroxide form captures chloride and sulfate, and the released H⁺ and OH⁻ recombine into water instead of accumulating as acid or base.

Ion exchange strips ions but leaves neutral organic molecules untouched, which is why the standard configuration holds TOC at 5 ppb rather than 2 ppb. The UV module attacks that fraction directly. A 185 nm photon carries enough energy to split water into hydroxyl radicals, which oxidize dissolved organics into carbon dioxide and short-chain organic acids. Those products carry charge, so the downstream resin bed captures them. The 254 nm output on the same lamp inactivates bacteria in the flow shell.

Endotoxins, nucleases, and proteases are large molecules carrying little or no net charge, so neither resin nor UV removes them reliably. Ultrafiltration separates by size instead. The PES membrane passes water molecules while retaining anything above its molecular weight cut-off, holding back pyrogens, RNase, DNase, and protease. Placing the module at the outlet puts that barrier downstream of every other stage, so material shed by the resin bed cannot reach the dispense point.
