Ball Pressure Test Apparatus - QualiHSA™ BPT

Ball Pressure Test Apparatus QualiHSA™ BPT presses a 5 mm steel ball into a heated specimen under a 20 N load to measure resistance to softening. Compliance laboratories run the test on enclosures, insulating supports, and other non-metallic parts of electrical equipment. The apparatus sits inside a heating cabinet held at the temperature the product standard names, and the operator measures the indentation left behind once the specimen has cooled. An indentation of 2.0 mm or less means the material passed.

Stainless steel construction runs through the loading device and the specimen support, so the apparatus holds its dimensions after repeated cycles at elevated test temperatures. The support is a solid stainless cylinder 50 mm in diameter and 100 mm long, with enough thermal mass to hold the specimen at temperature. Total applied force stays within 20 N ± 0.2 N, including the mass of the ball itself. The QualiHSA™ BPT needs a separate heating cabinet, which laboratories usually already own.

Plug and socket makers, appliance manufacturers, luminaire producers, and IT equipment suppliers all face a ball pressure requirement somewhere in their safety file. The test appears across several IEC product standards, each naming its own temperature for the part under examination. Buying one apparatus covers all of those programs, since the ball, load, and support geometry stay the same. Only the oven temperature changes with the product standard and the part being assessed.
