Theory and Method

Rockwell hardness testing measures a material's resistance to permanent indentation using a two-stage loading sequence. The tester first applies a preliminary test force that seats the indenter and sets a reference depth. It then adds the major test force, which drives the indenter deeper into the surface. After a set dwell time, the machine removes the major force while the preliminary force stays in place. The permanent increase in indentation depth defines the Rockwell hardness number, so a shallower indentation returns a higher value.

The scale selected determines the indenter and the total force. A diamond cone handles hard materials on scales such as HRC and HRA, while a carbide ball measures softer metals on scales such as HRBW. The QualiRocky™ D150Pro supports 60, 100, and 150 kgf loads and a wide set of Rockwell scales, which lets one instrument cover soft brass through hardened tool steel. Each scale pairs a defined indenter with a defined force to keep readings comparable across labs.

A precision stepper motor drives the loading system, so the instrument applies and removes force without dead weights or manual levers. The built-in depth measurement converts indentation into a hardness value and shows it on the touchscreen within seconds. Closed control of the load cycle reduces the vibration and timing errors common to manual testers. This design gives the QualiRocky™ D150Pro repeatable results across long production runs.
