Micro-Wave-Scan 3 Orange Peel DOI Meter
Orange Peel and DOI measurement on curved and small parts
The new Micro-Wave-Scan 3 features a sleek, ergonomic design with a large color touch display, similar to what you're familiar with on your smartphone. It leverages cutting-edge chip technology to quickly calculate waviness scales, significantly speeding up measurement times. Despite these advanced chips, the Micro-Wave-Scan 3 offers impressive battery life, allowing for extensive use on the production line or in the field. For the first time, it also provides Pass/Fail results directly on the display. Take your QC management digital with the powerful Smart-Chart, perfect for SPC data analysis and creating a standardized global system.
Ergonomic design fits in the palm of your hand
The design is specifically optimized for small and curved surfaces such as bumpers, gas tank doors, mirror housings, door handles, decorative trim, and motorcycle parts. Its compact and lightweight structure allows for easy one-handed operation, making it highly efficient for precision tasks.
- Suitable for curvatures greater than 300 mm
- Minimum sample size: 25 mm x 40 mm
- Selectable scan lengths of 20, 10, or even 5 cm
- Measurement area: 4 mm x scan length
- DOI (Distinctness of Image) measurement is possible without scanning the surface
- Strong correlation with the Wave-Scan 3 Dual, the recognized standard for appearance in the automotive industry
Brilliant color touch display

The capacitive display technology provides a cutting-edge haptic touch experience, allowing for quick and easy operation, including swipe functionality—no stylus needed. The display also automatically rotates, ensuring it's always in the right position for you.
The updated design features an extra-large, easy-to-read display with vibrant icons for intuitive menu navigation:
- Quick Check: Instantly measure without saving data.
- Measure: Automatically save measurements using predefined standards with scales, statistics, and limits.
- Organizer: Select a custom sampling procedure with standard colors and limits to measure a car body.
- Data View: Review your saved measurements.
- Configuration: Personalize your "Quick Check" and "Measure" modes for your specific needs.
With standards set up in the Smart-Chart, the new Micro-Wave-Scan 3 also provides Pass/Fail judgment directly on the display for efficient, on-the-spot assessments.
Objective and reliable appearance data

Surface appearance changes based on the size and distinctness of wavy structures when viewed from different distances. The Micro-Wave-Scan 3 uses a laser light source to scan the optical profile of high-gloss surfaces, analyzing it across four wavelength ranges (Wa-Wd) from 0.1 to 10 mm. Additionally, a camera captures an image focused on the reflection to assess the surface’s image-forming qualities, detecting structures smaller than 0.1 mm (du).
This process simulates our visual perception at both close (~30 cm) and far distances (~2-3 m). The result is a "structure spectrum," which forms the foundation for calculating customer-specific scales for orange peel and DOI (Distinctness of Image).
micro-wave-scan talks your language – company specific scales

The Wave-Scan family is the industry standard for objectively quantifying the harmony of a Class A surface finish in terms of orange peel and DOI. It is used by leading automotive, truck, aircraft, motorcycle, boat, and yacht manufacturers. Over time, customer-specific scales with different target values have been developed based on each OEM’s visual appearance evaluation. These company-specific scales serve as an objective measure to ensure that specifications are met, helping to eliminate disputes between automotive producers and their suppliers.
Dominant wavelength and amplitude

A new method was developed in collaboration with VW/Audi, utilizing Fast Fourier Transformation (FFT) to filter the optical profile and determine dominant waviness sizes and their intensity levels. Visual studies have shown that observers can distinguish samples based on these dominant wavelengths. The Micro-Wave-Scan serves as your QC tool to verify specifications, while also acting as a troubleshooting guide to analyze and optimize surface quality based on material and process parameters.
Always ready with smart docking station

The new generation optimizes energy consumption of the optical and electronic components, along with enhanced firmware, resulting in extended battery life—allowing up to 1,000 readings on a single charge.
- Charging is done through a newly designed docking station, enabling you to park and charge simultaneously.
- The docking station includes a second battery pack, always fully charged, with LED indicators showing the status of both batteries.
- Easily transfer your measurement data via the docking station.
- Optional automatic data transfer through Wi-Fi can be activated upon request.
smart-chart for Data Analysis

Go digital with the powerful Smart-Chart for SPC data analysis and set up a standardized global QC management system.
- Smart-Chart includes a robust standard management feature for defining scales and PASS/FAIL limits. Standardized sampling processes are created through "Organizers," which define clear sample identification and guide the operator through the process using custom schematics.
- Measured data is stored in an SQL database, allowing efficient handling of large datasets over time, with full network and server compatibility.
- Filter your database based on specific criteria:
- Example: Select a certain color, time range, or all "failed" (red-coded) test series for further analysis.
- The Drill-In function shows the historical trend of the last 20 measurements of the same model, color, and painting line. Simply click any point in the data table or graph for detailed insight.
- Smart-Chart offers a dynamic print layout, enabling you to create custom reports.
- Share data easily within the supply chain by extracting mini databases that can be merged with other datasets.
With Smart-Process, you’ll have the clarity to see where you are, where you’re headed, and how to get there.
