Standard Ultrapure Water System - QualiUWS™ S

QualiUWS™ S standard ultrapure water system gives laboratories Type 1 and high purity water at the bench from an ordinary tap connection. Output options cover 20, 40, and 60 liters per hour, so the same platform suits a single analyst or a shared instrument room. Ultrapure water reaches the dispensing point at 18.2 MΩ·cm, while the deionized stream holds above 16 MΩ·cm. A 5-inch capacitive touchscreen runs the whole process.

Four builds address different contamination concerns. The base unit reports TOC at 5 ppb, which suits buffer preparation, media, and general analytical work. Adding the dual-wavelength UV module pulls TOC down to 2 ppb for chromatography and mass spectrometry. The ultrafiltration build strips endotoxin, RNase, DNase, and protease for cell culture and IVF protocols. The UVF build carries both modules together.

Purification hardware sits behind a controller that logs what it produces. Sensors read feed, RO, DI, and ultrapure water quality continuously, and the TOC module tracks organic carbon down to 0.5 ppb. Records covering dispensing, alarms, and cartridge changes stay on the unit for five years and export as tamper-resistant PDF. USB, Ethernet, and Wi-Fi ports link the system to LIMS or a building management platform.

Theory and Method

Pretreatment protects everything downstream. A 12-inch polypropylene cartridge with a pleated depth membrane captures particles at 5 μm, and a catalytic activated carbon fiber cartridge adsorbs dissolved organics and free chlorine at the same rating. Chlorine degrades polyamide membrane chemistry, so removing it ahead of the pump extends reverse osmosis service life. Pairing a pleated filter with carbon fiber raises throughput per cartridge and lengthens the replacement interval.

The reverse osmosis stage separates on pressure and selectivity. A pump lifts feed pressure past the osmotic pressure, and water molecules diffuse through the dense polyamide layer while hydrated ions and larger organics stay on the concentrate side. The membrane clears 98 to 99 percent of dissolved ions and over 99 percent of organics heavier than 300 daltons. Mixed-bed resin then trades residual cations for hydrogen and anions for hydroxide, which recombine as water and lift resistivity toward 18.2 MΩ·cm at 25 °C.

Optional modules attack what ion exchange cannot reach. Ultraviolet output at 185 nm generates hydroxyl radicals inside a 316L stainless flow cell, and those radicals oxidize trace organics into carbon dioxide and short-chain acids that the final polishing cartridge retains. The 254 nm line acts on microbial nucleic acid and holds bacterial counts down in the loop. An ultrafiltration membrane rated above 5,000 daltons separates pyrogen, endotoxin, and nuclease molecules by size alone.

Ultrapure, DI, and RO stage values are typical and shift with feed water composition, inlet pressure, temperature, and RO membrane condition. TOC figures assume inlet TOC below 1000 ppb for standard builds and below 50 ppb for UV builds, with correct sampling technique. Bacteria, endotoxin, RNase, DNase, and protease values require the matching terminal microfilter or ultrafilter.
