CNC Milling Machines

Qualitest introduces our new advance Sample Specimen Preparation CNC machines known as QualiMill and QualiLathe.

A test specimen is the most important component of tensile testing for it determines the actual physical properties of the material being tested. The specimen must conform to exact physical dimensions and must be free of induced cold working or heat distortion. Qualified laboratory personnel and accurately calibrated tensile machines are important, but the ultimate test results are based on the quality and accuracy of the test specimen.

A highly skilled machinist, a precision milling machine and considerable hand finishing can achieve the required configurations of the test specimen. However, the slow milling cutter speeds create heavy chip loads and can induce severe internal distortion to the machined edges. The amount of induced cold working or heat distortion cannot be determined by visual or heat distortion cannot be determined by visual inspection, hence test results often produce erratic and inaccurate tensile properties.

Specimens of light gauge sheet must be blanked, sheared or die cut to the required tensile configuration. The basic principle of shearing causes severe deformation and distortion to the critical specimen edges and creates even greater variations and errors in the physical properties.

The ideal tensile specimen should duplicate the pure basic metal or plastic being tested with a total absence of tool marks, incipent cracks, induced stresses, internal deformation or heat distortion. One of our most sought after products is our CNC Milling Machines. Used widely for sample preparation in the manufacturing industry, our CNC machines are designed to follow a G-code program that is implanted by the operator. This allows them to cut various shapes and sizes according to ASTM, ISO, EN, JIS, and other methods. This can be done for flat sheet type samples or some custom shapes using fixtures. This machine can also create prototype parts and is best suited for high volume and heavy metal cutting.

Desktop Mini CNC Machines vs. Dedicated Charpy Specimen Milling Machines

Dedicated machines like the Blacks CNM integrate custom fixtures specifically for Charpy specimen preparation. While they excel in this single function, their limited versatility means customers often need additional specialized machines for other specimen types. This increases long-term costs. Additionally, sub-size fixtures for the Blacks CNM are optional add-ons, meaning customers must purchase extra fixtures for different specimen sizes.

In contrast, Qualitest's universal Mini CNC Milling Machines (such as the QualiMill M4 Desktop Mill and QualiMill-220 Desktop Mill) offer greater flexibility. These machines can process Charpy impact test specimens along with other workpieces, thanks to programmable adjustments and fixture swaps. This adaptability significantly enhances cost efficiency and operational flexibility.

Adaptation Strategy: Smooth Integration with Existing and New Fixturing

Metallic Charpy Specimen

A. Supporting Existing Fixtures

Facilities that have already invested in fixture designs for the Blacks CNM system don’t have to start from scratch. Qualitest offers technical support to evaluate existing fixtures and determine their compatibility with the Mini CNC platforms.

In many cases, minor modifications or adapter components can enable seamless integration, allowing labs to transition to a more flexible machining solution without losing the value of their current tooling investments. This approach minimizes downtime, reduces the learning curve for operators, and supports a cost-effective equipment upgrade.

B. Optimized for New Fixture Solutions

Qualitest Mini CNC machines are engineered with versatility in mind and can be equipped with a wide range of fixture options to accommodate multiple specimen types. Whether preparing Charpy impact test specimens, tensile bars, dog-bone profiles, or custom research samples, these systems are highly adaptable.

Custom fixturing can be developed based on the dimensional and geometrical requirements of your test standards or unique application needs. The CNC platform’s programmable controls ensure repeatable, high-precision cuts, while modular fixture designs allow for easy swapping and expansion as testing requirements evolve.

This flexibility in fixturing makes Qualitest Mini CNC systems a practical long-term solution for labs looking to expand capabilities, streamline operations, and reduce the number of specialized machines required on the shop floor.

So, here’s the summary:

  • For Existing Fixture Compatibility: If customers already have fixture designs from Blacks CNM, Qualitest can verify their compatibility with our Mini CNC machines.
  • For New Fixtures: Qualitest's Mini CNC machines are designed to accommodate various fixtures, making them ideal for Charpy impact specimens, tensile test specimens, and other sample types.
