The Vicat test measures the dynamic penetration resistance of a standardized falling rod into a fresh cementitious mix over set time intervals. It determines the transition of hydraulic cement, mortar, or gypsum from a fluid-plastic state into a rigid, load-bearing solid matrix, replacing guesswork on the production floor with direct physical measurement.
When dry cement binds with water, it begins as a flowable suspension with low shear resistance, allowing a weighted needle assembly to drop through to the bottom base plate. As chemical hydration accelerates, interlocking calcium silicate hydrate (C-S-H) crystals grow throughout the paste, driving up the internal yield resistance of the mixture.
As this internal crystalline network stiffens, it halts the falling needle. Recording the drop depth over elapsed time identifies the exact thresholds where workability ends and structural rigidity begins.

Standardized Test Procedures
Normal Consistency Determination
Setting time runs require establishing the standard baseline water ratio first to prevent irregular, non-compliant readings.

[ Repeat Consistency Run ]
- ASTM C187 Method: The 10 mm consistency plunger is lowered to the sample surface and released. Normal consistency is reached when the plunger sinks 10 ± 1 mm below the surface within 30 seconds.
- EN 196-3 Method: Normal consistency is reached when the plunger stops 6 ± 2 mm above the bottom glass plate (representing a penetration depth of 34 ± 2 mm).
Initial and Final Setting Time Determination
Once the standard consistency water percentage is locked in, a fresh batch is mixed. Elapsed time is tracked starting the second dry powder contacts water.

• EN 196-3: Pin enters 0.5 mm; ring leaves no trace
- Initial Setting Time (ASTM C191): The elapsed time until the 1 mm needle penetrates to a depth of 25 mm.
- Initial Setting Time (EN 196-3): The elapsed time until the 1.13 mm needle stops 4 ± 1 mm above the glass base plate.
- Final Setting Time (ASTM C191): The point when the 1 mm needle no longer leaves a complete circular impression on the specimen surface.
- Final Setting Time (EN 196-3): The point when the 1.13 mm needle with the 5 mm annular attachment penetrates 0.5 mm into the paste, but the circular cutting ring fails to leave an imprint.

[ COMPLIANT TEST REPORTING & CURVE GENERATION ]
Method A: Manual Reference Testing
Manual Vicat Needle Apparatus / Consistency Tester: The primary reference setup for baseline testing under ASTM C187, ASTM C191, ASTM C472, and EN 196-3. An operator manually releases the sliding rod at predetermined time intervals, reads displacement directly from the graduated millimeter scale, and cleans the needle tip by hand between drops.
Method B: Automated Testing Workflows
- Model Vicat306 (Single-Station with Paper Drum Recorder): Automates periodic needle drops on a preset timer while plotting penetration depth mechanically onto a rotating paper drum chart for a permanent physical record.
- Model Vicat360 (Single-Station with Color LCD Display): Incorporates an electronic linear variable differential transformer (LVDT) sensor to log needle displacement continuously. Test data and penetration curves are displayed in real time on the color screen and exported via dedicated software.
- QualiVicat™ II (Single-Station Automated Workstation): Features motorized needle indexing that shifts the drop location on fresh coordinates across each cycle. An automated cleaning and drying brush station cleans the needle tip between drops to enable unattended operation from initial mix to final set.
- Multi-Station PC-Controlled System (High-Throughput Workstation): Designed for high-volume commercial testing facilities running parallel tests. This setup controls multiple testing bays simultaneously through integrated PC software. It includes built-in thermal conditioning water baths to maintain constant temperature requirements for testing cement (EN 196-3, ASTM C191), concrete admixtures (EN 480-2), mortar (ASTM C807), and gypsum plasters (EN 13279-2, ASTM C472).
